Many energy-related products which are sold in the domestic, commercial, or industrial sectors in the EU are covered by the EU Eco Design Directive. This was created in order to improve the energy and environmental performance of the covered products and to set minimum requirements for them.

It addresses the environmental impacts of products during their life span, including the way in which they are manufactured and disposed of, to ensure that their impact on the environment is as minimal as possible.

The UK has corresponding legislation originating from when the UK was an EU Member State.

What is the Ecodeisgn Directive?

The current Eco Design for Energy-Related Products Directive was created in 2009 to replace the previous Energy Using Products Directive, and it aims to reduce the environmental impact that the manufacture, use and disposal of energy related products can have.

It is a framework for performance criteria which all manufacturers need to meet in order to bring their product to market within the EU and stands alongside other CE marking Directives.

It should be remembered that it is only a framework directive containing general requirements and so there are no specific Eco Design requirements attached to it and no overall energy saving targets.

The EU Eco Design Directive allows for the creation of implementing measures, usually in the form of an EU Regulation, to ensure that targeted products across the European Union all satisfy minimum standards in order to reduce environmental impacts.

The Eco Design Directive lays out the principles of Eco Design as well as defining the conditions and criteria for setting more specific requirements which can then be researched and tailored to individual product groups. The subsequent requirements are published as Implementing Measures (IM’s) and are usually made as European Commission Regulations which then enter into force in all European Union Member States.

The implementing measure should consider the product’s entire life cycle from the way it is produced all the way through to its disposal when it is no longer in use, in order to minimise the energy that is used, the waste materials and hazardous substances that are released and the waste and energy that is created by production.

As the European Commission estimates that 80% of all environmental impacts from products are determined during the design phase of that product, the Eco Design Directive has been put in place to target how products are conceived long before they are brought to market.
